JLE#4: Introduction of JL

About Me!

Dream Vacation: Lake Como, Italy

Favorite TV Show: Seinfeld

Favorite movie (several):  Tropic Thunder, Shawshank Redemption, Wedding Crashers

Favorite Food: Sushi

Least Favorite Food: Artichokes and Mushrooms

Favorite Quote: "Do the right thing, do the best you can, and always show people you care. You've got
to make a sincere attempt to have the right goals to begin with, then go after them with appropriate
effort, and remember that you can't really achieve anything great without the help of others.”

If I could have dinner with three people, past or present, it would be with: Sinatra, Lou Holtz, and
Eisenhower

Favorite Music: Dave Matthews Band

I am a junior Communication major and there really isn't a lot to say about my area of study other than it's a part of the college of arts and sciences.  However, I did enjoy some of the courses I took so far within the college.  Risk and Crisis Communication and Communication in Business are among my most favorite courses.  The courses were my favorite mainly because of the two instructors I had.  Good people and their material they taught was easy to comprehend and applicable to everyday situations inside and outside of the workplace.  I have a short term goal in mind, but I am still thinking out my medium to long term goals. For short term, I am aiming to get the licenses required for entry level positions in the financial services industry.  Some of my most cherished hobbies involve music, video games, piano, fitness, spending time with friends and family, I really enjoy food, bourbon, wine and cigars.  I have recently been getting more and more into bourbon and the collective following it has.  I really enjoy music and I would consider it a big part of my everyday routines.  I listen to all eras and genres of music which pretty much ranges from Sinatra and Wu-Tang clan and pretty much everything in between.  Looking forward to a great semester!

  1. Howdy! It's really neat to me that you're so interested in Sinatra, I don't really hear too many younger folk talk about him or his music, or bourbon for that matter. You think there's a whole lot of folklore about making and enjoying bourbon?

  2. Good evening!
Are there certain favorite video games of yours? I like playing GTA, rocket league, and fortnite on my playstation 4. I am also a big fan of piano; although I can't play much myself, my sister took lessons growing up and I always enjoyed going to her recitals. Good luck with getting your license in the financial services industry and have a great semester!

  3. Hi, nice to meet you! I like the theme of your blog—it's very peaceful. I would also LOVE to go to Lake Como. I like sushi too; have you found any good places in Norman? I've only been to the Moon Sushi a couple times. I used to play the piano, but I'm not very good anymore, so I have a lot of respect for people who play musical instruments. What's your favorite type of bourbon?

  4. Howdy Jack! You've got good taste in a lot of things (though I can't say I agree with you on artichokes, just gotta know how to cook em). I can definitely relate to your wide-ranging taste in music, it always draws a lot of laughs when I have the aux and my playlist jumps from a Johnny Cash ballad to 36 Chambers. Last but not least, if I can make a recommendation, I'd urge you to try Metaxa if you haven't. It's a Greek liquor, and it ain't bourbon (it's a bit more like a brandy), but it definitely goes well with cigars! I hope you have an excellent semester, and I wish you luck getting those financial services licenses!

  5. Jack, I guess you go by JL. I'm sorry for addressing you otherwise in my last comment. I have a question: why are you majoring in Communication if you want to do Finance? I'm sure you have your reasons. Personally, when I see JL I think Justice League. I was extremely disappointed in the movie a few years ago and am glad the original director is getting another chance to do right by my childhood heroes. I thought maybe you would know what I'm talking about since you're into videogames and movies, but if not, no big deal. Have a great semester, JL.

    1. JL, have you seen the Snyder Cut? I thought it was an improvement on the original but not a stellar movie on its own. The intrigue of it all made it stand out, though. I also watched a show called "Invincible" on Amazon Prime recently. I have no idea if you'd like it... Falcon and Winter Soldier is really good so far...

  6. Hi JL!
That lake is beautiful and is definitely a good destination for a dream vacation. I never really liked Seinfeld, but I do like Jerry Seinfeld's amazing Porsche collection. If you have not seen it you should definitely check it out! I also share your passion for a wide range of music because my taste are practically the same! You definitely have a good major as communication is a really important business skill and life skill that many people struggle at.

  7. JL, awesome intro! Tropic thunder is a freakin' hilarious movie and it's good to know there's someone else out there who has seen it! Seems like anytime I quote it or mention it, nobody has seen it! Bourbon tasting or whiskey tasting in general is definitely something you could really get into. I like the smell and if there's a cult for bourbon, my old man is definitely in it, lol. He's always offering a taste of his latest and greatest but I'm %100 a beer guy, to his disappointment. What's your favorite bourbon? If I HAD to choose I'd go with woodford reserve or Jim Beam Black.

  8. Hi JL!
I have never been a fan of sushi, although both my brothers love it. They say that the best place is Volcano, and while I cannot weigh in on the sushi, they do have very good Hibachi shrimp, which is what I always get. I agree with you about the artichokes and mushrooms. There’s just no saving those two foods!

  9. This is great, Jack! Now I am wondering if maybe... just maybe... the amazing dishes they make with artichokes and mushrooms in Italy can change your mind about those foods: everything tastes better by the shores of Lake Como! And seriously, Italian artichokes (carciofi) can be seriously yummy!
And wow, you've sure gotten to see risk and crisis communication in action over this past year. Some organizations have done well with that. And some....uhhhhh... not so well. That sounds like great preparation for a career in financial services. People in general are pretty terrible at managing risk, so if you can find ways to help them with that, I know they will be grateful. I'm in the midst of planning out my retirement which is a weird (but exciting) process, and I really appreciate the good advice I have received... even though I am still a very risk-averse person, ha ha. I'm very good at taking risks with food (the weirder the better!), but less so with financial planning. I learned a lot this year, though, and am very grateful for people's expertise. I hope you will find a good path to develop your own expertise and share it with the people out there (there are lots of us!) who need it. :-)

  10. Hey Jack! I also want to go to Italy soon. I have a friend moving out there this summer and we are already planning for me to visit! It's gonna be great! Communication is a really good field to go into. I am a social work major and everything we do involves good communication. I also like wine, as well. I honestly haven't tried bourbon before. Although, I wouldn't be against it. I think its cool you play piano. I've always wanted to try, but I honestly don't know if I have enough patience to learn an instrument. It takes hard work, so good for you! It also looks like you have a wide range of music taste! I like Sinatra as well, whats your favorite song by him? Anyway, I hope you have a great semester!

  11. Hey Jack,
I would love to go and see Lake Como also! I have heard about it from a few friends of mine who have gone there, and it sounds amazing! What would you like to do while you are in the area, besides enjoy the wine and scenery? Also, I was really curious who that quote was from? It sounded vaguely familiar to me, but I can't place it! One final thing, I am looking for some new music to listen to- as I have exhausted my supply of new music- and would love a few recommendations from someone else who has an eclectic taste in music!

  12. Hi Jack! I was actually supposed to go to Italy last summer for a study abroad opportunity but of course covid ruined that. Italy is still on my bucket list! I love sushi too and my favorite place is Volcano which is located in Brookhaven if you haven't been to it yet (but you probably have if you love sushi)! I cannot believe you like bourbon. YUCK! But everyone has their opinions tehe. I am too much of a sissy when it comes to bourbon but you go for voluntarily drinking it! Can't wait to read your stories!

  13. Hey Jack! First off, Lou Holtz was definitely not the first person that came to mind to have dinner with, but now that you say it that would be such a great pick full of cool stories. I love sushi too, who doesn't love some good food or a nice cigar?? Best of luck this semester, hope everything is smooth sailing for you!

  14. Hey Jack!

I am similar to you with music! I will listen to almost anything, and I love to listen to music while studying. It makes everything seem happier. I think it's very cool that you already have your short term goals established. I'm curious as to how you became interested in your future career! I like the part of your quote that says to always show people that you care. Kindness can go a long way and can make someone's day and even week! Nice to meet you!

  15. Hi Jack!

I think it is awesome that music is a big part of your everyday routine! Music is super important to stimulate the mind and also just change mood in a positive way. What kind of music do you enjoy playing on the piano most? I know I am commenting late in the semester, but I hope you have been enjoying the class so far!

  16. Hey Jack,
I really enjoy playing video games and listening to music too. Do you have a preference when it comes to platforms ? I personally like apple or sometimes YouTube music, and I also prefer playstation over xbox. That picture of Lake Como is very beautiful and looks like a nice place to travel. Hope your semester has gone well so far, I look forward to reading some of your stories!

  17. Hey Jack,
Italy is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. I didn't get to see Lake Como, but I traveled to Sicily, then up to Naples, and then along the Amalfi Coast to Sorrento. It's a beautiful country and I hope you get to go there some day! Seinfeld is a real OG. I use to watch that show with my cousins when I was a kid. I am also a Communication major! It is a tough major to build a future around because it is so broad. Best of luck continuing to figure out your goals! Also, I love your favorite quote. It is a great life quote. Keep going strong!

  18. Hi Jack!
I often don't hear much about people who go into the communications branch of finance, so it is cool to see someone taking that path here at OU! Crisis and Risk Communications seems like a really interesting class, and I am sure it has helped you to learn skills that are essential to finance. I'm more of a fan of mixed drinks, but I think that is just because I have a bit of a sweet tooth. My taste in music tends to cover a large range as well. I can begin by listening to Darius Rucker, move to Tiny Meat Gang and end with a Falling in Reverse song. Best of luck with finding your long-term goals and succeeding with your short-term ones!

  19. Hi Jack!
I think we might have the same dream vacation spot! I really enjoyed reading about you and putting a personality with the stories I've read. I also love Sushi but unfortunately I love artichokes and mushrooms too. It's nice seeing someone else who's in the college of Gaylord in my class! I was beginning to feel like the only one.

  20. Hi Jack!
I studied abroad in Italy and am seriously so mad that I didn't make the trip to Lake Como when I was there. I know some people that did and said it was absolutely amazing. Also, Seinfeld is a work of art. The humor stands the test of time and it is one of my favorite shows to watch with my parents. You have a very wide range of genres of music, that is funny! I only like artichokes in the form of spinach and artichoke dip, otherwise they really bother me. It was nice meeting you!
